Over the ankle

At minimum, choose boots that cover and support the ankle. Low sneakers can fly off, twist, or shred when things go wrong.

What motorcycle boots add

Look for ankle protection, toe and heel reinforcement, abrasion resistance, oil-resistant soles, and enough structure that the boot does not fold or twist easily.

Street boots vs. touring boots

Short riding boots can work well for commuting and casual riding. Taller touring or sport boots usually offer more coverage and weather protection, but may be less convenient off the bike.

Work boots are not the same as motorcycle boots. They are usually better than sneakers, but they are not designed around motorcycle crashes, shifting, or ankle retention.
